Why Won't My Polyurethane Dry? How to Fix It
Humidity, cold, and coats applied too thick are the three most common reasons polyurethane stays tacky far past its expected dry time — and each has a different, specific fix.
Polyurethane that's still tacky or soft well past the time listed on the can almost always traces back to one of a few environmental or application causes — rarely a defective product, and identifying which cause applies determines whether the fix is patience, a changed environment, or actually removing and redoing the coat.
1. High humidity — the most common cause
Polyurethane (both oil-based and water-based) cures through a chemical reaction with air, and high humidity slows that reaction significantly — a coat that would dry in a few hours under normal conditions can take a full day or longer in a humid room. This is the single most common reason for a "won't dry" complaint, and the fix is usually just waiting longer, or improving ventilation and, where possible, reducing humidity in the room.
2. Cold temperature
Most polyurethane products specify a minimum application and cure temperature, typically around 65-70°F (18-21°C) — curing considerably slower, or not fully at all, below that range. A garage or basement project in cool weather is a common setting for this exact problem; moving the piece somewhere warmer (or warming the room) restarts proper curing.
3. Applied too thick
A heavy, thick coat dries on the surface first, forming a skin that then traps uncured, still-wet polyurethane underneath — this can leave a surface that looks and feels dry to a light touch while remaining genuinely soft and tacky underneath for a much longer time, sometimes indefinitely without intervention. Thin, even coats cure through their whole depth far more reliably than one heavy coat.
4. Contamination in the product or on the surface
Oil, wax, or silicone contamination on the surface being coated, or in the polyurethane itself (from a dirty stir stick, a contaminated container, or product past its shelf life) can interfere with proper curing chemistry — less common than the environmental causes above, but worth considering if a piece consistently fails to cure despite good conditions and reasonable coat thickness.
5. What to do if it's genuinely stuck: not drying after several days
1. Confirm temperature and humidity are within the product's recommended range
2. If conditions are fine and it's still not curing after several days,
the coat likely needs to be removed
3. Wipe off what can still be removed with mineral spirits (oil-based)
or before full cure begins
4. If it's begun to skin over and can't be wiped away, it typically needs
to be sanded off once it's at least firm enough to sand
6. Preventing this on the next coat
Apply thin coats, work in a space within the product's recommended temperature range, and check the humidity if the space is prone to it (a bathroom, a basement, a humid climate without air conditioning) — these three checks catch the overwhelming majority of "won't dry" cases before they happen again on a subsequent coat.
