What Is Milk Paint?
A genuinely old paint technology — milk protein, lime, and pigment, sold today as a dry powder mixed with water — prized for an authentic, chippy, matte finish that modern acrylic paint has to fake.
Milk paint is one of the oldest known paint formulations, historically made from milk protein (casein), lime, and natural pigment — it's genuinely different in composition from modern latex or acrylic paint, not just a marketing name for a similar-looking product, and that different chemistry is exactly what gives it its distinctive look and behavior.
1. How it's sold and mixed today
Modern milk paint is typically sold as a dry powder, mixed with water shortly before use — this is different from nearly every other paint product on the market, which comes pre-mixed and ready to use straight from the can. The powder has a genuinely limited working life once mixed with water (often just a day or two), so it needs to be mixed in batches sized for the actual project at hand.
2. The characteristic look
Milk paint dries to a flat, chalky, matte finish with real depth and variation — it's the traditional finish behind authentically aged and distressed furniture, and its tendency to chip and wear unevenly on certain surfaces (especially without a bonding agent, see below) is often the specific look people are trying to achieve, not a flaw to avoid.
3. Adhesion varies dramatically by surface
This is the single most important practical fact about milk paint: on porous, untreated surfaces (bare wood, some raw fabrics) it bonds tightly and holds up well. On sealed, previously finished, or non-porous surfaces (varnished wood, metal, glass, glossy paint), milk paint without a bonding agent added tends to chip and flake readily — sometimes intentionally sought after for that distressed look, sometimes an unwelcome surprise for someone expecting standard paint adhesion.
4. Using a bonding agent for reliable, non-chipping adhesion

Most milk paint brands sell a companion bonding agent specifically to add when a smooth, non-chipping, more conventional-paint-like durability is wanted on a sealed or non-porous surface — mixing this in defeats the "authentic chip" look but produces a far more stable, long-lasting finish comparable to standard paint's durability.
5. Sealing milk paint
Because milk paint is inherently more porous and less water-resistant than acrylic or latex paint, a topcoat sealer (wax, or a water-based polyurethane/polyacrylic) is standard practice on furniture and anything that will see regular handling or moisture exposure — unsealed milk paint on a functional piece of furniture wears and stains more readily than a sealed equivalent.
6. Why choose milk paint over standard chalk-style paint
Chalk-style paints (a different, more modern product, despite sometimes being visually compared to milk paint) are formulated for a similarly matte finish but with more standardized, predictable adhesion straight out of the can. Milk paint's appeal is specifically its authentic historical formulation and the genuinely variable, organic texture and chipping behavior that comes with it — a deliberate aesthetic choice more than a straightforward practical upgrade over other matte-finish paint options.
