How to Remove Spray Paint From Plastic

1. Always test on a hidden spot first
Plastic type varies enormously (ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and more), and each reacts differently to solvents — a method that's perfectly safe on one plastic item can cloud or craze another. A small, inconspicuous test spot before treating the whole area is the one step that matters most here.
2. Start with the gentlest option: soap and warm water
For fresh or thin overspray, warm soapy water and a soft cloth or nylon-bristle brush removes more than expected before any solvent is needed — always worth trying first regardless of how the paint got there.

5. What to avoid on plastic specifically
Acetone, lacquer thinner, and other strong solvents are the ones most likely to cloud, soften, or craze plastic on contact — these are fine on metal or glass but are a real risk on plastic and should generally be avoided unless a specific product is labeled plastic-safe and has been spot-tested first.
6. For textured or porous plastic
Textured plastic (some automotive trim, certain outdoor furniture) can trap paint in its texture more stubbornly than a smooth surface — a soft-bristle brush worked into the texture, combined with whichever solvent tested safely, reaches into those recesses better than a flat cloth wipe alone.
7. Mechanical removal as a last resort
For paint that solvents won't fully lift, very fine sanding (400+ grit) can work on plastic that isn't glossy or won't show sanding marks — but this permanently dulls a glossy finish, so it's a last resort for a surface where appearance matters, not a first choice.
